Tisbury residents voted in favor of borrowing $4.8 million to overhaul and expand the Vineyard Haven Public Library at a special town meeting that lasted more than three hours Tuesday.

Tisbury will hold a special town meeting Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The library’s elected board of trustees is asking Tisbury voters to approve a Proposition 2 1/2 override for up to $8.8 million in borrowing for the project, which includes building an addition for which the trustees are raising private donations.

Just how much borrowing will be needed is still being determined, library director Amy Ryan told the select board at its Sept. 24 meeting.
