School vacation means playoff action this week for the Vineyarders. The postseason tournaments begin for the basketball and hockey teams this week while the swim and indoor track teams have already shown out at the state championships.
The Vineyard boys basketball team became back-to-back Cape and Islands league champions Tuesday as they dispatched Cape Cod Academy 82-32 at home for their 13th win of the season.
As the winter sports season progresses, some standout performances are taking place, including a national championship qualifying high jump by junior Camille Brand.
On Sunday, the Vineyard boys basketball team took on Nantucket at the TD Garden as part of the Andrew James Lawson Foundation, Inc. Invitational. Nantucket won the game 67-58 but the event was bigger than the final score.
On Saturday, the high school boys swim team won the Cape Cod Classic, a first for the program. The annual tournament features six local competitors and the competition is heated each year.
Winter on the Island is here and daylight is fleeting, but the lights are bright at the ice arena, gymnasium and YMCA pool as the Vineyard student athletes are back for another season of hockey, basketball, indoor track and swimming.
