With three teams clinching bids in state tournaments, the regional high school athletic department is set to have a busy playoff season.

It was a busy weekend at home for Vineyard spring sports teams with baseball and softball and boys tennis playing at home on Friday, followed up on Saturday with home games for baseball and boys lacrosse.

The Vineyard baseball team opened its season in a decisive way, shutting out Dennis-Yarmouth 10-0 on Monday.

On the courts, fields, track and on the water, the regional high school spring sports teams are getting ready for their season openers this weekend.

On Wednesday evening the high school committee voted to allow middle school and charter school students to play for the regional high school girls softball team.

Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School senior Kaleb Hatt has been selected to play in this years North-South Shriners All-Star football game.

Zach Utz placed third in the mile, the 4X800 relay team placed 10th and Jonathan Norton placed 18th in the 1,000 meter at the all-state meet Saturday.

With two top performances, the regional high school indoor track and field teams made their mark at the MIAA Division Five Championship meet Friday night.

At the meet, Zach Utz won the boys mile, and the Martha’s Vineyard boys 4x800 meter relay landed a first place finish. Nearly all the athletes from both the boys and girls teams reached new personal bests at the meet, assistant coach Donald Brown told the Gazette.

“I’m really happy with how it went,” he said.

The Martha’s Vineyard boys high school basketball team punched their ticket to the playoffs Saturday with a gutsy 65-58 victory over rival Nantucket.
